Winemaker to Know: Cameron Woodbridge

winemaker Cameron WoodbridgeWine isn’t simply a beverage. Wine is a passion, a way of life, of living. The appreciation of wine is something that Cameron Woodbridge was raised with. Growing up around the wine country of southern Ontario in Canada started this journey but it wasn’t until he was much older that the real journey began. Years were spent appreciating fine wines from France, Italy, Australia but it was the wines of California that he ultimately fell in love with. However, his journey of exploration in winemaking began in 2004 in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. Working alongside his brother and mentor Jayson Woodbridge (of Hundred Acre fame), Cameron began the process of learning that fueled his love of wine. He decided to not only learn this art of winemaking, but he would make his own wine! In 2005 I joined his brother’s winemaking team in California and began his education in earnest. Under the watchful eye and expert guidance of internationally acclaimed winemaker, Philippe Melka, and with his brother’s encouragement and tutelage, Cameron honed his skills as vintner. In 2006, his 4th harvest, it was time.

Stormy Weather

The first vintage of his flagship wine Stormy Weather (100% sold out) was well received despite being eclipsed by the 2007 vintage and then again by the 2008, and so it goes… Now, in 2017, about to start his 12th vintage of Stormy Weather, Cameron Woodbridge can still recall the lessons learned making wine in his brothers winery. Never, ever, compromise on quality! And never hurry! The wine will tell you when it’s ready. You will know with total certainty when it is time. Stormy Weather is not bottled nor sold until it is at its very prime. Very long barrel aging (as long as 4 years!) in 100% new French Oak with extensive bottle aging prior to release allows the wine to develop to its full potential. No compromise.

A New Project

In 2012 Cameron, along with a group of oenophile friends took on a new project, with the purchase of 120 acres of unplanted land in Napa, they started a new winery: Wolf's Head. The Wolf’s Head name came about when they realized that the perimeter of the land was shaped like a wolf’s head!

The vision with the Wolf’s Head family of wines is to produce something exceptional yet at a price point that anyone can afford. Cameron has sourced fruit from Napa Valley to make each of the Wolf’s Head Cabernet Sauvignon vintages. Cameron has also applied his style of winemaking to their wines from Paso Robles. Currently the Wolf’s Head family includes the flagship Wolf’s Head Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons.  There is also Wolf’s Head Iberia, a spicy dense wine created from a field blend of Spanish and Portuguese varietals in the Paso Robles area and a Ruby Port.

Aromas of sweet cherries, mocha and summer flowers. Flavors of ripe blackberries, cherries and figs fill the pallet from the start. Firm tannins and toasty notes carry the mid-pallet to a toasted dark chocolate and cherry finish.
